Vaccniations

I'm not sure if this has actually been talked about before on this forum, though from doing a quick search it doesn't come up.

So FAF, how do you feel about vaccines?

Do you believe they are good? Dangerous? Do you think they're wholly unnecessary? Why or why not?

I kind of assume that the majority of people here have been vaccinated at some point in their life though seeing as how it's a requirement for school (at least in the US). But I know there's a lot of backlash concerning how ethical or safe it is to inject your child with an essentially dead virus. Not to mention the recent allegations that vaccines can cause disorders such as autism. Of course, almost every site I find concerning this doesn't support that claim.

This all comes about because I was watching Law & Order: SVU. But it had a lot more to do with the obligation to vaccinate children so they don't become a risk to other children. Which leads to another question. Do you feel parents are obligated to do this?

So there you have it.

Me personally, I see nothing wrong with them in most cases. There's risk involved but there's risk involved in taking Tylenol too. Or any other medicine.

I think vaccines are, by and large, a very good thing. They have to pass rigorous standards before vaccination programs are rolled out. [although this doesn't mean side effects are impossible, a small portion of kids always get an adverse reaction to measles vaccines for example]

Unfortunately I missed my MMR when I was a kid because my mum felt uneasy about it [she's a doctor, but had recently had an experience of an adverse reaction to the vaccine]
So I had it about a month ago and got a lovely measles rash as a result. x3

I think vaccines are very necessary, although maybe not smallpox ones. It's vital to have herd immunity to the infections which still pose a big risk.

The anti-vaccination movement kills far more people than vaccines do. So yeah totally for vaccines.

I think Jenny McCarthy needs to be beaten with a tube sock full of pennies. Even if she were right--which the data shows she is absolutely fucking not---I'd still tend to think that living with autism is preferable to dying of tetanus or whooping cough.

There are precious few situations in which getting inoculated is worse than contracting an actual fucking deadly disease.

I've been told they're not really useful, but I do see their importance. Many people around here just don't trust doctors is all.

I got all my shots when I was little so it's not much of a problem for me now. They won't let your kid even walk in the school if they're not vaccinated these days. The same goes for colleges. I don't know if it's different outside the US but it's definitely something that needs to be done. That's how my aunt died. My grandmother didn't get her vaccinated as a baby and she died of pneumonia shortly after. Kind of one of those dark family secrets noone talks about.

I'm all for vaccines. I think a lot of the 'problems' are really just spawned by public skepticism. After all, a quick jab can save one's life. What can be better?

**** that **** now! Bitch
Ugh I hate people against vaccines, FACTS prove they reduce as much as 9x% of deaths, why would people be fucking against them, a lot of people in africa and south america DIE because they don't have access to vaccines and these fuckers talking nonsense, makes me really angry.

In the past vaccines have almost eradicated some pretty nasty diseases (and practically wiped out some), so my thinking is, what's not to like?

People could be against them because they don't think like you maybe?

I'm not really a fan of the flu and the 20 bazillion other diseases vaccinations prevent me from getting so I don't see any real issue.

I think vaccinations are beneficial and necessary. They greatly contributed in preventing endemics by building herd immunity.

However, to maintain herd immunity, the percentage of vaccinated people must exceed the threshold, and increase of unvaccinated free riders only contributes to exposing whole population to the dangers of outbreak. Of course, advances in medicine has lowered mortality of many diseases, but considering the social cost generated from hospitalizations and the fact that getting infected still can induce nasty complications to patients…. I think vaccinations should be obligatory.

Penn and Teller: Bullshit episode dealing with the assholes that don't get their kids vaccinated becuase they listened to an old, defunct, now discredited study by Dr. Wakefield who is now the doctor equivalent of being disbarred.

Penn pleading with people to vaccinate their kids and not listen to idiots like Jenny McCarthy.

And he makes a good point, too. Even if it did cause autism, which it does not, but even if it did, which it does not, even if it did, WHICH IT DOES NOT, even if it did, it would still be worth it to get vaccinations.

I don't really care either way.

I've never been vaccinated before (even in school) because my mom didn't want us to. Her friend had a daughter who died from a vaccine so that scared her into keeping us away from them. On the flip side, I know that vaccines save a lot of people from very avoidable deaths.

I'd probably have Tetanus is it wasn't for the vaccine.

I'm all for them.
Same. I drove a nail through my thumb once while I was pulling up carpet tacks in my room. Not only did it hurt like hell but I'm pretty sure the nails in my room were pretty rusted.

Funny thing about flu vaccines is that they have a tendency to not actually work. They're mainly for old people and babies though.

All for them.

I really don't know what's up with the "vaccines cause autism" crowd, since the vast majority of their evidence comes from a study which was discovered to be bogus years ago by the scientific community.

There are some who'd debate you on that, I'm pretty sure.

but yeah, vaccines rock and those people against them are dummies

What's up with people is that they believe that the alternative would necessarily involve accepting "blame" for their child's autism in some form. With thimoserol, the blame is on somebody ELSE.

Also, old convictions die hard. It's very difficult for most people to admit when they were wrong, so they'll typically do little dances that allow them to hold on to their beliefs.

Icky said:

Oh, sure, especially when you're talking about more extreme forms of low-functioning autism. I'm sympathetic to that.

But, even so, there are treatments and therapies for autism, whereas there are no treatments or therapies for Just Being Dead.

Well considering I only get them when my doctor at my annual physical asks if I want to take the 2 minutes to get one I think it's worth it. Not like I'm gonna die from a flu or some shit.

And so, our favorite Batty friend died of a disease easily counteracted with a simple vaccination.
A sad day for FaF. A sad day indeed.

Get them damnit >:c

I'm under the belief that if an anti-vaccine group is struck by a terrible, easily preventable illness, they had it coming.

Vaccinations save.

Fucking immunize yourselves, you assholes.

Vaccinations are a great thing. The only downside is I feel a little drained for the rest of the day after I've had one whilst my body combats against the dead virus, but considering the numerous diseases it shields me from that's a very small price to pay.
