What are some examples of an irresponsible pet owner?

My ex used to talk to her "kitten" that way when he sprayed on stuff in the house. It was always "bad kitten, don't do that!"
Realize that said kitten was actually a 1 year old intact house cat. The place stunk sooooo bad.

Yeah, that's called a "barn cat."

Little weird looking collie crosses are some of my favourite dogs. We had a great (but hard work) collie/terrier mix when I was a kid.

And she had 5 more cats to boot. Seriously I am not making it up. They were all house cats. It was beyond disgusting.

The house I remodeled had been owned by people who let cats and dogs run around all over the place... they weren't house trained. So pulling up the carpet was a lot of fun.

Oh I bet. And I know the horrors. Yuck.
I've had the luxury of going into animal hoarders homes before... I'm talking tyvek suit and respirator type houses. Cats are the worst in terms of urine smell, imo.

People who treat their dogs like children and talk to them in that soft cooing voice constantly that makes them sound like fucking imbeciles. They usually don't reprimand their dogs either, and they're one step away from telling fido, "No, no, bad boy, use your words!"

To be fair, they have domesticated foxes now.
Sure, but domestication of foxes is a very recent thing, therefore there's a crapton of hidden dangers and unexplored nuances when it comes to tame foxes (and it'll probably stay that way for another couple of decades or so). So, still not the best idea.

irresponsible cat owners: People who don't spay/neuter their cats although they have the financial means for it. People who buy or breed Persians with extreme short noses. People who are not willing to care for a sick or old cat.

irresponsible dog owners: People who don't walk their dogs regularily. People who let their dog shit on the pavement and don't clean up the mess.

I'm not sure if I posted the link before.

www.pbs.org: Why domesticated foxes are genetically fascinating (and terrible pets)

Cultures across the globe consider foxes to be incorrigibly wild. In both ancient fables and big-budget movies, these fluffy mammals are depicted as being clever, intelligent and untamable. Untamable, that is, until an unparalleled biology experiment started in Siberia almost 60 years ago.

The tale begins with Dmitry Belyaev, who was studying genetics during a very dangerous time in the Soviet Union. State officials campaigned actively against genetic research with a tactic known as Lysenkoism, under which hundreds of biologists were either thrown in prison or executed. After Joseph Stalin’s death, the government’s grasp on genetic research loosened, and though it was still controversial, Belyaev was finally able to test a hypothesis he had been secretly pursuing.

So it's actually more than just domesticating foxes for the sake of it, it also a really neat look into how easy it is to tame canids to start liking humans and displaying more passive personalities, and exhibiting less "wild type" phenotypes such a ultra pointy noses, and instead have broader muzzles and floppier ears.

When people buy pets just to have a pet and keep it like that says a lot about the lack of ones "family." Animals are not a hamster to throw in a cage and leave like a plant. You don't need to get fancy but if you want an animal just to have it there's trigger sign #1.

It takes some bloody deep and focused psychology and money to take care of a pet. Young people do not have that these days.

I used to have a coworker that would beg her husband to buy her puppies, she would never socialize or train them and then get mad/bored with them after about a month and give them away. She had cats too and would always beg me to take her one cat because "she was a pain" even though I explained that I'm in a situation where I can't have pets. I would've saved that poor cat in a heartbeat.

I also knew someone that got a mini pig and had to give it away because they didn't do their research. They had no clue they could get to 50+ pounds and they just thought it would stay small forever.

Jesus some people. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's nowhere near as bad as having a snake for a pet.
But still, it almost sounds abusive to me.

And oh hey that mini pig story. I've heard it at least 3 times by now! Person stupidly buys a baby piglet and is told it'd stay small, less than a month later and NOPE! Almost straight outta Deviant Art, that pig gets big fast! Unwitting "pet" owner didn't take that liveStock into account and gets a big burden on their hands that they were probably VERY ill equipped to take care of!
Should I say again, how I wonder how we ever survived past the stone age? Because if people today are tricked that easily it makes me wonder how much easier it was back then on top of that.

People who shave huskies
Could you elaborate? I don't know if there's anything special about husky fur that makes this particularly irresponsible, since I move more in cat circles, but I've seen examples of people clipping their semilonghair cats in summer to keep them more comfortable in the heat. If that's the context/motivation, I'm not sure why it would be inappropriate?

Something to do with how their undercoat protects them from the cold in the winter and keeps them cool in the summer. If you shave your husky in the summer they can actually overheat because they don't have that insulation layer.

Hello there! Unfortunately, I have faced a lot of cases when people act irresponsibly with pets, even stray cats and dogs. The saddest thing is when kids repeat their parent’s actions, and adults prise them for hitting a cat or a dog. A few hours ago, I saw two little girls that brought a hamster and threw it like a toy to my cats. Thankfully, my cats didn’t do anything to the poor creature. I saw it and placed a hamster in jar temporally. I’m not planning to return the hamster to its “owners”. The issue is that I never had a hamster in my life and don’t know how to give them the best care. I’ve found a few tips on petsoid. Maybe someone else can give me some advice apart from what is written there?

As kids, I and my Brothers had a few goldfish. We were irresponsible at some point for not getting one of them therapy, because it kept leaping out of the bowl until it finally died.
I Don't think it was a problem with the bowl, none of the other fish had a problem with it.

People who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on purebred dogs with "papers" when there are so many amazing dogs in shelters. I adopt retired racing greyhounds and they are amazing dogs and make great pets. All that I have adopted came house broken, and socialized. They like everyone and get along with other dogs. They're called 40mph couch potatoes for a reason.

Another thing that burns my ass are people who get a dog only to chain it in the yard alone 24/7, no matter the weather.

It's at least a bit fortunate if the pets of such owners can manage to seek daily needs from elsewhere that their owners don't give them.

I see this all the time!
We have a dog! Yay!
Are you gonna do anything with it? Take it for walks?
Nah, maybe later.

I personally can't stand people that yell at them for no reason. Like teens making videos with their pets. You can record something funny without screaming at them and (more often than not) stressing them out.
People that hit their dogs. I've only had to do this when my mom adopted a sexually aggressive rottie. The family treated me like shit back then, and so did the dog. I don't blame the dog though. I blame my parents for watching Dog Whisperer and mom for letting her boyfriend try to become one.

People are terrible pet owners in general if they don't treat it like it's a part of the family. Every dog has its personality, yes, but not every dog dreams of sitting in a room all day, on the hard floor, eating the same exact meal every day, and then gets shocked any time it tries to speak or get excited.

Even if it's a fish. Get it a proper sized tank and give it some kind of habitat, instead of just rocks and water. I know someone that didn't even clean it properly and got all sad when it died.

AND ANOTHER THING, People that 'collect' pets! Unless you have the skills and money to deal with a variety of animals, DONT ADOPT THEM. If you can't keep track of your rats/cats/dogs/ferrets, surrender them to a no-kill shelter or let someone else adopt them!!!

I agree. And your post reminded me....

As if this wasn't bad enough, there are further the following:

Their pets (probably from lack of care and stuff) starting to behave abnormally and/or irritate their owners, the owners start to show violence towards their pets or even kick them outta the home. What's wrong with them? It was them who invited those poor souls as their pet--be the reason whatever--and those owners can't comprehend their pets then do that to their pets as they started to send a message that they need attention...

What's wrong with them really... What do they think those pets are? Toys? Consumables? I really wish they stop getting a pet without any deeper thoughts. And this is why I'm still not owning a cat or something...

Guess therapists aren't there for nothing. Those owners need professional help if they can't communicate on their own and really wanna go well with their pets.

Trivia:
There are opposite kind of owners who treat their pets like their own kids/family. I have heard many people blaming them for caring too much about animals, or whatever 'legit' reason they think they have.

But know what? These enthusiasts are trillion times better than those irresponsible owners who treat their pets like consumables.

Conclusion:
Okay it sounded violent, but well... Honestly I don't find any reason to speak for those irresponsible owners, unless their certain situation was too bad to make other choices. (Most are not understandable even though..)
