what does music do for you?

physically, mentally, something else...

i ask this question since it seems like there's a wide-range of reasons that people choose to listen to music

for instance, i know someone who listens to music for the sake of productivity; aka he becomes more focused from hearing rhythm/beats

a related question, how do you perceive music? does it create imagery in your mind, it it purely just a auditory stimulation, err whut? this is likely an important factor as to why music does different thing for different people

i am interested in this b/c i like music A LOT but i can't figure out why; feed me some food for thought here

This would probably belong in The Tube.

Though music helps me concentrate, and it somewhat brings out a sense of creativity in me.

but this is more of a meta/philosophical question than a question about music media

like, why do you think you are more creative when listening to music?

It can get me pumped, it can get me happy, it can get me sad, creative, relaxed, etc etc

It really depends on the music itself

It's hard to explain them feels. Sometimes I just listen to music to enjoy it or rock out, other times it seems to be the only way to get what's going on inside to the outside. Rookie by Boy Sets Fire is a good example of this and was the spark for my fursona. The music, tone, and lyrics just resonate for some reason.

Perhaps.
I think such because it's inspiring and it sets off the creative part of my brain.
Best way I can put it.

I pretty much listen to music whenever I can, it helps me concentrate on work or if I have free time I'll usually just listen to something that reflects whatever mood I'm in. I don't know what I'd do without it sometimes. <_<

As for the imagery part. I wouldn't say I immediately picture something when I listen to it, however; when I go to sleep, whatever happened to me during the day will be reflected in my dreams. Which almost always includes music since I listen to it everyday.

Formal when angry
It has many purposes for myself. I use it to wake up, but conversely I also use music to sooth myself or send off to sleep.

I use it for creativity, but sometimes I simply want something to help my thoughts wander.

A band like Cinema Strange helps my mind take a step back from the mundane it becomes so enthralled by.

I'm almost always listening to music, though my phone speaker is starting to crackle and break from so much use. It can put me through the whole stream of emotions...I mostly play stuff that calms me/background noise, or in some cases, focuses me and pumps me up.

Characterless sack of potatoes
I can't even fathom how depressed I would be without any form of music in my life.
It takes me into mental states that I would never otherwise experience. That is, every song is a journey to somewhere unique.
I don't usually get visual imagery from listening to music, usually it works the other way, and I can only focus on the song or the visual; not both.
I find it difficult to fully appreciate music unless I'm in a dark room with no other stimulus. I don't quite get the same enjoyment out of playing music in the background, although I still do it.

good metal lets me work out stress and anger. it also makes me work harder and faster.

It helps me relax and focus, especially when I have an essay to write. The noise drowns out distractions, and the beat eases stress. As for how I perceive it, I tend to tune into the bass/drum line.

Would really have to depend on the music. Good ambient/classical/noise will make me all pensive and distant. Metal pumps me up and makes me happier (the more dissonant, the better). Post-rock makes me feel inspired and optimistic. So on and so forth.

But mostly, music just makes me want to play my instruments |3

I am the exact opposite. It is a very bad idea for me to listen to music while doing homework because it is the distraction. I only turn music on while working if I have an irrepressible urge, and then concentrating on the work takes much more effort. It sucks because I enjoy music very much, but I must resist the temptation.

Depends on the genre. It either makes me feel pumped up and wanting to rock n roll with my heavy metal, dance with my insane clown posse, or imagine this epic movie when listening to classical/instrumental music, like this overall epic confident feeling. etc... It somewhat makes me feel a little smarter because I usually think when I am listening to it. It's like I wanna get out my emotions.

Takin it slow.
My chosen fave genre is power metal. Most prominently I listen to Hammerfall and Dragonforce, recently Firewind and such as well.

I use it to get angry, because anger makes me more productive.

I use it as a form of meditation. When the troubles of the world around me are becoming to much for me to handle, I always flip out my iPod Nano and play something that whisks me away to another world. Maybe I'll be sitting by an ocean at night with a full moon in the sky, maybe I'll be under an Oak tree on a beautiful Autumn's day. Maybe I'll be on a stage playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, maybe I'll be sitting down on the grass in front of my school and drawing a tree blowing in the wind.

Music, to me, is escapism. A door to your imagination where you can think up an entire world for yourself. An opportunity to escape the worrisome dilemmas of the outside world. A chance to take stock, collect your thoughts, think clearly and to calm yourself.

I've become rather dependent on music.
I need it to work out and I can't write or draw well without it.

If it is metal, punk rock, industrial metal, or classic rock, it makes me want to take out my guitar and jam for hours. If it is hip-hop, It makes me either want to start dancing or start rapping. I can't really listen to country that much because it makes me want to go to sleep. It just depends on what genre it is, but music in general for me is a great way to pass the time and enjoy myself.
