What's it like to hide that you are furry.

Before I came out to my friends as being a Scalie I'd partake in plenty of anti-Furry activity. Mostly in griefing Furry related SS13 servers (Citadel mainly). I learned the hard way that Furry tears were among the sweetest of internet delicacies, even if at the cost of my fellow furs/scales.

But after I came out as a Scalie it turned out they were really accepting of it, despite my initial belief that they'd probably hate me for it. Already got a taste for Furry/Scalie blood though, so there's no coming back now. I am the schoolyard bully.

I'm not really "hiding it" per say, but I don't go announcing it.

If someone asks (depending on who they are) then I'll tell them.

Being a furry isn't like being gay. You are way more likely to get push back from parents for being gay.

I'm sure there are people who have been kicked out for being furry, but I think that is really rare.

My parents know. There wasn’t any kind of “coming out.” Told my parents I was going to a furry convention in Pittsburgh, and they were just like, “Well have a good time!” And that was that. (They did ask what it was, and I told them. My sister’s boyfriends lightly picks on me about it, but it’s all in good fun)

I hid in school because I didn’t wanna risk being bullied.

But as you get older, no one really cares what you do with your life.

Don't really hide it. It's just part of my art. Never saw it as something to hide. It's just a fandom. All these extreme animosities towards it are kind of ridiculous.

Finally comfortable in my fur!
I just dont bring it up until somebody asks! To be fair, so far its ensured intelligent conversation. Im not particularly flashing the idea in peoples faces, but I wouldnt lie if someone asked! Like my sexuality, its not anybody elses concern unless they voice an interest! Only had a few people get wierd about it, but I think its just tough to define what constitues a 'furry' really, there are many facets to that particular title.

Though honestly Im not a fan of labels of any type, except names, they are actually quite helpful!

I think it depends on what you're 'hiding'.

Are you a NSFW loving furry who enjoys odd fetishes and kinks, or do you just like silly cartoon animals?
Do you regularly RP and create lore, or do you just enjoy the visual art side?
Is this a person who fursuits or not? Do they own a mursuit?
Are you spiritually invested in your fursona, maybe a type of otherkin/therian?

I imagine someone who participates in certain activities while suited or has a list of colorful fetishes, would have a different experience than someone who has no suit to their name and just draws SFW cartoons.
Especially when you take their environment and social circle into consideration.
To just ask how it feels to 'hide that you're a furry' is too hard to answer given context, it's going to have a dramatically different effect based on what furry is to you.

To me, I 'hide' it from the general public because of the negative spotlight that I don't associate with.
But it doesn't really affect my life at all, socially or otherwise. It's just a hobby to me that I happen to not bring up unless relevant.
Sometimes if someone sees a piece of anthro art I've done, I get asked "wait, are you a furry?" and once I answer "yeah, a bit" that's usually the end of the discussion.
