Why do some furs need to be like this (small rant)

So basically we had a recent meetup with people from our local modest sized furry fandom (around 40-50 people came grand total in the span of 3 days). It was all fine and dandy until the last say when after some thermal bath we went to a teahouse.

Now basically the way it works at that place is you pay your consumption when you are finished and before you leave. But since the whole place was literally crowded with us, it quickly became almost like an honor system where hopefully most folks are decent enough not to be a cheapskate.
After 10 o clock the night, 20 minutes after the place closed down it turned out that there were at least 6-7(!!) drinks that never ever got paid by anyone. Although thankfully those got covered by said guy, this is still embarassing for the following reasons

1. All participant were well over 18 or 20 years old. One would think with age comes some intelligence as well as some spine

2. It doesnt give a good impression about us in the eyes of said place and Im highly doubtful this is something we could pull off many times before they say "sorry but we dont want you guys here anymore?

We debated this yesterday for hours long until we came to the conclusion, lack of better options, that everybody will pay in advance. It sucks but something needs to be done ><

Anyway whats your thoughts about this?

Sorry if its not the right category to post it, since its technically community related too as well as general ^^

I'd like to think that maybe some of these folks were confused? I assume by the "thermal bath" comment that you're not American, but its common at big community get-togethers for the food and drinks to be covered.

For the sake of doing right by the fellow that covered the drinks, I might make a post on your meetup group/discord/facebook/other group that the drinks were not covered, and that [Person] had covered for them that night. If nothing else, it might guilt people into paying them back.

It thankfully got covered (one of us was nice enough to pay the sum for the few scumbag steves , it certainly left me shaking my head a little bit.

I suppose its more about expecting people not to make an ass of themselves if anything

Some people are moochers. I've gone to many a meet (both furry and non) where people pulled the "Oh, I forgot my wallet." Y'know, it happens to the best of us, but when it happens to the same person 2 to 3 times in a row, at the same meets, you start to question. If you don't have money don't go. Or if you do go, order what you can afford and nothing more. People should be accountable, and if they're not, you need to have a system where everybody pays for their own. No group tabs.

Wow, did not expect Dragoneer show up in person ^^

but yeah, you are right. From what a veteran member of our local fandom said, this has been an issue since like 10 or so years already (?) . Tbh if I were in charge of said furry group, i would just ban said moochers (if found out) from said meetups, no exceptions. Adults shouldnt have to be explained as to why paying for your consumptions is a basic thing to do, and not just being polite.

But yeah, so far we got settled for something along those lines where everyone pays up when they order and just be done with that.

In my experience, about 3-5% of people in a social drinking setting will consistently exploit for as many drinks as they can get away with. It's just as likely an impulse/willpower control issue as it is a cheapskate issue, speaking as someone who drinks too much. I guarantee those 6-7 drinks were only a handful of people, and that it's typical behavior for them.

I doubt your crowd stood out compared to any other large flash crowd. The fact they didn't enforce payment in advance is the establishment's fault, and they probably made far far more off the flash mob rush than they lost on half a dozen drinks. Any drink: soda, beer, or mixed drinks I guarantee are the highest profit margin items and/or they're cheating you on them somehow.

I assume most of the time it works out well, just hoping we didnt left a sour impression about ourselves, because thats my biggest worry.

I'll just add that I, at least, find it conceivable that some of those drinks were not left unpaid on purpose. Some people (myself being one of them) are derps, and I could easily see myself forgetting if I had four or five drinks over a few hours, provided there isn't some kind of system (like sushi-go-rounds' colored plates, for instance) to easily keep track of your consumption. I don't know if that's something that could happen at that particular tea house, since I don't know exactly how their "pay when you leave" system is set up, but if it's possible, I'd consider that as an explanation alongside people being cheapskates.

(I mean, if it was brought to my attention that I miscalculated I'd also be utterly mortified because the last thing I want is to inconvenience people, but bottom line is my memory is terrible and I'd forget my head if it wasn't attached, sometimes.)

Well, some people are just dicks. I don't know if that's what you wanted to hear, but it's true. Everyone acts like a dick now and again. But some people are just dix 4 lyfe.

Some people are dicks, some don't pay attention, some forget. Some do all 3 of them, both intentionally and unintentionally.

If you're going out to drink the very least you can pay for your own shit unless someone have offered to pay for it/them.

Aye, I'd probably set a rule where things must be paid for before delivered.
