Since nobody else is explaining this clearly, a "knot" is the term commonly applied to the bulbus glandis, a gland at the base of a male canine's penis that swells during copulation into the female partner's vaginal tract to "tie" the pair together until well after insemination. There. Don't be so touchy, it's a furry forum. XD

I heard that jackals are particularly infamous for how they, if you'll pardon the pun, tie the knot.

It's being used to refer to someone's significant other rather than the words "boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife" like any normal person would do and it's horrifically obnoxious.

I find the term "mate" when referring to a significant other to be very disturbing. It conjures up images of male animals battling it out for the right to claim the female as their own personal sex slave. **Twitch**

I don't think they're ruining it, though. I just think the usage itself is flippin' creepy.

I actually don't like the words "boyfriend" or "girlfriend," either. Conjures up images of infatuated pre-teens that claim to have found TRU LUV and that their relationship is TOTALLY SPECIAL!!

I find mate makes more sense if you're married to somebody, not as boyfriend/girlfriend, boyfriend/boyfriend, or girlfriend/girlfriend.
