(you) What got you into the furry fandom and why?

My true furry awakening happened when I found out about fursuits! That's when I found out what furries were and that I very much wanted to play around in an adorable, hot, barely ventilated, fur and foam deathtrap. xD
Before then, I'd say back when I was little and started playing neopets and getting really into everyone's art. I absolutely adored every artist I could find and all the little stories they had for their characters/pets! It was great back then.

3 of my best friends were all furries (Each unrelated to the other) and I was like "I clearly attract these people and get along with em, might wanna check it out" and boom I stayed xD

In my case it's not exactly a long story.

Found Furry porn as a kid. Found out later there were a community around this, in 2008. Boom, I joined it. It's only in the past year where I've really gotten involved in the fandom, and some of the communities inside it.

Back in my 4chan days i found a furry porn thread, i found it interesting and wanted to know more, obviously i got told oh they fuck animals and they are all weird, i decided to go on a forum and just ask if what i was told was true, found out the truth and thought it was pretty cool, the whole idea intrigued me, making your own cartoon character, the amount of original content in the fandom but also finding out that there was other people who liked paws like i did, so it made me feel less insane, but i quit in 2008 because of all the hate i was getting, too much of a troll back then, my aussie attitude of swearing and that sort of thing also smoking weed and just generally being myself.

I was already depressed after someone passed, and the rejection upset me, so i just quit and that was my last attempt untill back around 2014, checked out a bunch of cool artists, the toony types like dingoroo, kipper and so on, but was too intimidated to create an FA again, i also joined some clash of clans furry clans, but again, people didn't like me talking about drugs, conspiracies or history or any of the stuff i was into, i did find one guy who i still speak to, who he himself has only me as a friend, but this month i'm really making an effort to get into it, not just to motivate me to draw again but to try and make some friends but im starting to think its pointless, im just too edgy, controversial, a downer and all my other different personalities for most i guess so i dunno.

How did I get into the Furry fandom? Long. Fucking. Story. But I'll tell the long version, since I got the time.

I was on my regular late-night YouTube binge, getting into what some of us (I used to be one of these, mind you) normies call the "weird end of YouTube"- exactly the fucking same as the Furry definition, just includes Furry content in the definition xP. I found one of YouTube's Furry Content Creators, Kothorix, and I ended up binging his "F@©K IT" series- ending with a video by the name of "Questions Furries have for Normies" (linked here).

So it got me thinking, and this was a while after my channel had gotten online... What IS a Furry?

So I started researching the fandom, and it started to resonate with me- I realized that there was something I could relate to. Being a good researcher, and a better journalist, I attempted to gain every last bit of insight I could possibly have... and then my fursona was a thing. Without thinking, I made the art I did- and then realized the potential consequences afterwords. I had a short conversation with Kothorix via Twitter, and at the same time the group of fellow furries on this site helped me come to terms with my realization- let's face it: it's not a Normy's goal to be furry. In my case, though, it just happened... and I ultimately decided to roll with it. I know, it isn't a religion or a sexuality, or anything else that's special, but sometimes the small things are the hardest to come to terms with.

And here I am... designing a fursuit... if you told me 5 years ago this would be me, I'd have said you were joking! Anyway, thanks for your time, and your patience with my wall of text, but that's about it; I wondered, I researched, and I caught the art fever. Have a good one!

I loved animals as a kid (90's kid here, lol), used to get along better with the dogs and cat than with my own family - my mom used to call me "Doctor Doolittle" 'cause I just had a way with animals. Started having sortakinda what I guess nowadays I'd call "spiritual" dreams about being a fox or running around with packs of wolves or whatever, and so I just took to it naturally, I dunno, was always drawing doodles of animal people and writing sci-fi/fantasy stories. Didn't really get into the fandom until probably about 2004 though, was only in it a few years in some tiny little corner of it on a quiet little MUCK, then dropped off for years and went all closetfur, and now I'm back 'cause ... no joke ... I saw this video about how furries were responding to Zootopia coming out and it made me really miss being around furries years ago. XD

So now I'M BACK, babeh! WOO!

well i got into it bc i heard that it was a good place to look for ppl to commission u (which... isn't entirely true... i've only had one (and a half?) ppl commission me in the last month, but then again i'm not very patient - oops)

BUT i'd had quite an interest in anthro animals for some time? well, more-so my friend's ocs and those realistic fursuits (bc they're pretty cool imo, but fursuiting in general interested me due to the fact that from what i know, fursuit creation is quite costly and difficult so i have a pretty high respect for ppl who make them and would love to be able to afford to make my own one day (not that i'd know where to wear it, i don't really want to flaunt it in public or anything... probs just make the head and leave it at that))

i stayed away from joining up to any furry sites or drawing anthros myself for a long time bc of the whole 'cringe' aspect abt furries that's shoved down everyones' throats and i didn't wanna be associated w/ that, but the idea that i might get commissioned (more than on tumblr or fb, anyway - which is never) motivated me enough to look further into it and hey, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be!
now i'm kinda like, well who cares? everyone here is so nice and i'm having fun! i honestly wish i had joined in sooner tbh :0

i honestly don't care as much abt being commissioned now bc just sharing my art and having ppl like it, and seeing the art and creations that others make feels fulfilling enough ;u;

Well I never really started thinking about it until around 12 when I was surfing Deviantart for he first time, and I came across the person named Ripped-Saurian

And after I decided I actually sorta like his content (that content is pretty old now), I began finding more people like him and wouldn't you know it, I eventually learned about this fandom

I first discovered about the furry community when I saw a satirical article about furries on a site. I had a blast reading it, and I laughed a lot thinking "damn! these people are WEIRD!"
I did read that article multiple times for laughs, and then I decided to check out personally what the deal about furries were.
Long story short, I joined a furry forum who proved to be VERY welcoming and full of nice, friendly people, and now I'm a furry myself.

Personally I got into it by all the art and how-- variable it can be drawn. The pure mixture of style and design compliments it. I am an aspiring animator hoping to reach Vivziepop's level and that alone inspired me into drawing more and more hoping to reach full potential!

Now, as the title thread question says, what got you into the furry fandom and why? I wanna hear your inspirations and thoughts!
Don´t know I have been drawing creatures with fur so I don´t know if it qualifies me as furry.

Always was a fan of real and fictional animals, and when I was 14 I got my first job at an airbrushing booth. My boss was a furry as well as someone I ended up having known from The Lion King Mailing List I was subscribed to when I was about 11; she and another well-known artist in my area got me drawing and I've enjoyed illustrating anthro stuff ever since.

I've had an affinity for anthro characters since I was 6 and played Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon on the PSX. However, I didn't officially join the fandom until November, when I found out that anthro characters could get into certain NSFW situations. Like... I credit the comic "Archeologis Vixen" by Ricardo Canheta for turning me into an "official" fur.

You do not need to like NSFW art to be a "official" fur. I do not like it!

Oh, I know that. I was just saying it was my personal catalyst for joining the fandom. You don't have to like NSFW artwork to be a fur. As they say, variety is the spice of life. ;)

Like drugs

Like white tiger kittens

Combined white tiger kittens and drugs. Got Koko, a white tiger kitten made of Oxycodone that leeches out painkillers through his fur in order to kill a patient's pain and prevent opiate abuse while also improving healing ability via physical and emotional contact with a purring kitten.

I made a kitten out of painkillers and created a solution to the opiate abuse epidemic, what did you do today plebs?

I've always loved drawing cartoon animals. Each species have character traits that give it a personality before anything else is established. You can represent all walks of life while completely bypassing color of skin or other such superficial nonsense.

I've been enjoying furry stuff for my whole life without even realizing that it was furry. I "officially" became a furry this year after that realization. I knew about furries (yeah yeah all those furry cringe compilations) and wasn't exactly disgusted by them, but only disliked. After a lot of thinking I realized that I was even a furry back in 2011-2012 with the whole MLP thing and I was absolutely fucking shocked.

But after some time I just kinda accepted the fact that I'm a furry. Mostly because of the artstyles and all the different variation possible. So yeah, cool stuff.

also the community is really kind and nice

What me into the fandom? Well, when i was a young child i LOVED animals that had human traits and characteristics. My friends and i would play a LOT of fantasy roleplay so i always played as an anthro wolf or fox. Not until like five years later i discovered the fandom, and i was so happy there were people that shared my intrests. Also, my family calls me "the dog whisperer because i am the only one that can convince my dog (that weighs more than me) to come inside when he is barking. Anyways I kinda got sucked in the fandom, and here i am!

The comics I'd write as a kid were exclusively about animal-like aliens so I feel like it was bound to happen from a young age. I started to actually get into the fandom, like dippin' my feet in, after going to 4chan and wondering what all the hate for furries was. It looked cute and fun. So eventually I made a fursona and said "this means nothing" but welp, here I am!

Man I gotta go back for this one... I was in 7th grade, probably back in 2010 and 2011. I think what ended up getting me into the fandom is watching some convention videos I found on YouTube and it seemed like an absolute blast to me. I never made a fursona until I got back into the fandom in September/October of 2016. I would like to attend a con very soon.
