Your Opinion on Churches

They don't build *up* to fit all the people.

There are usually no people on more than one floor, even when they are almost like skyscrapers.

Is this really necessary?

Okay true, that's excessive.

I'm not sure if it would be better to make a separated topic for churches as architecture instead mixing it with religion theme.

The discussion of architecture is all that is likely holding back a full flame-war... I think it is needed here.

A religion or political fire on FAF... There is no fire extinguisher or fire service that can put that out.

I kinda like how old churches looks like. That medieval feel on them, that little bit dark outside and amazingly beautiful inside. That's all what I can say.
I don't really like to be in churches, never and as about religion side, I left church ten years ago because I just felt that it does not have anything to offer for me and I don't really believe in christian or other ways either.
I still like to think that world is filled with nature spirits or something like it!

I like churches architecturally. I like being in them when there's no service. I like some of the Catholic rituals (Vespers <3) but in general, I don't feel comfortable being in them when there's service in session. It feels like I'm intruding, and also like I don't belong. (And often times people want to insta-convert you).

I don't belong though, I'm firmly an electic pagan, and have my own spaces I enjoy (the local woods for example).

This is the reason some people are called retards to be honest... Those people piss me off so hard they exist everywhere not just in churches though.

Yeah, I know plenty of atheist who are like this too. They treat it almost as a religion in their attempts to "convert" people, usually simply coming off as insulting in their attacks on religion.

I am an atheist myself, but I find these people incredibly annoying. It is so much more effective to confront religion with logic and reasoning that disproves it, rather than spewing angry vitriol that will only make the person less likely to consider your position.

I adore the architecture and artwork put into a lot of them, from old country wooden churches to the stone and/or brick masterpieces. Although in the past few years there has been a design shift to what looks like a garage or warehouse, and it seems like such a lack of care on their part and interest on their part. I know, looks ain't everything, but do have a wee bit of pride in your appearance.

As for going into one, nah, I'll pass. Dunno about the churches in your areas, but I think the ones locally worship the A/C more than God. It is painfully cold in all the ones I've been to and makes the whole visit quite unpleasant.

Architecturally speaking I love churches especially ones that have the gothic and romanesque influences; I like to visit and see the places of worship and respect other's churches and temples.

as for the people within, or the messages they speak...
not so much; but my experience has been roman catholic and so I'm sure there are other sects more modern and not entrenched in the ways of 'old'; the majority of the people are nice. it's just with the 'ways of old' I don't feel very welcome as a person

Churches have a great architetonic appeal to them. I am not religious, so sometimes I wish more buildings would be as aesthetically pleasing as them

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty hostile to churches. I was raised Southern Baptist and I'm gay. I can elaborate if you like.

So, if we're talking about churches as buildings, I honestly like them, by and large. They're meant to be warm, inviting places for communities to gather, shelters for the tired, broken, and in need of spiritual healing. Their architecture often reflects this, as it should!

But...then you start getting into the subject of organized religion. GOOD churches, meaning, good preachers with good congregations, can be counted on one hand, in any given area. All too often, dogmas become more important than the actual spirit of God (whichever version you dig, or don't, entirely up to you), and the message of any given religion, all of which summed up best by Bill and Ted: "Be Most Excellent to Each Other".

As such, while I like the buildings...I hold onto a healthy separation of Church and Faith

Church is the shit.

Seriously I went to catholic school and everyone can agree it was awesome. Teachers actually gave a shit about you, the Priest at the school was a total bro and we did some really awesome and fun shit that brought us all together like a family. I still hang out with my comrades to this day because we all went through it together.

Now as for churches themselves? I put it this way.

When I needed help during the Siege I was in, my church was there for me. I had a priest who listened to my cries for help and give me guidance, I had people who actually cared about me, and I was taught how to be a better person and to keep fighting day after day. I don't care if you don't believe in God, that's all you, but to me? The creator will always have someone ready to fight for him without violence.

I have all of those things and I'm not religious. Good for you, though.

Don't get me wrong, religion, like many things, CAN be a good influence in the world. But....it's easily as dangerous as guns, and for many of the same reasons. The fact that you have a good one that you belong to, and are happy with, is something I honestly feel should be celebrated.

and unfortunately priests in schools have a reputation for providing more than just 'pastoral love'. :\

but I digress; this is a rather different thing to discussing churches.
